A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos for homes seeking an upgrade similar to Sky Q without monthly fees. Launched recently, this device offers features like program recording, live TV pause, and ample content storage on its internal hard drive, akin to Sky’s premium service.

The standout feature of the Manhattan S4-R is its cost efficiency. In contrast to Sky Q’s subscription model, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels with a one-time purchase, eliminating the need for ongoing payments. This device operates on Freesat, utilizing existing satellite dishes to deliver a range of free TV channels, such as BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and others.

With a user-friendly interface and built-in search functionalities, the S4-R also grants access to a vast library of on-demand content, totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat distinguishes itself by being entirely free for viewers.

The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently retailing for £219.99 at stores like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB variants set to release soon. Demand is high, as indicated by Argos listing the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”

According to Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, the S4-R aims to provide Freesat users with a subscription-free experience akin to their T4-R Freeview recorder. Notably, the S4-R enhances recording capabilities, enabling up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous two-channel limit, making it an attractive option for households seeking an affordable yet flexible TV service.

In a similar move challenging traditional TV providers, the Pleio puck has entered the market, offering streaming access to TVs without aerial connections. This device streams over 50 live channels via the internet, diverging from conventional broadcast methods.

After initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is now available for purchase on platforms like Amazon and eBay, priced at £99.99 and includes a gaming controller along with access to over 200 online games.

Sky, on the other hand, has announced a 20 percent price reduction in anticipation of the upcoming World Cup. The Sky Glass Air TV now starts from £4.50 per month, while the enhanced Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, is available from £11 per month.
