Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has advocated for reduced barriers on open-source AI in the United States to enhance competition with Chinese counterparts. The social media giant unveiled a smaller and more adaptable model named Muse Glimmer, tailored for tasks on Mac or PC with a single graphics card. Zuckerberg hinted at the imminent launch of larger models in a video post alongside a 14-page essay emphasizing the importance of widespread AI usage.

The push for open-weight AI has gained momentum in the business sphere due to concerns about escalating AI costs and recent security breaches involving models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta. Open-weight models offer customizable core components, enabling users to tailor them to their specific needs, unlike closed models exclusively controlled by companies. Moreover, open-weight models are generally more cost-effective.

Recent high-profile Chinese open-weight models have spotlighted the advantages of this approach. Notably, Hugging Face, an AI collaboration, utilized a Chinese open-weight model to thwart an attack, showcasing the limitations of closed-source models in identifying threats. Meta, alongside other prominent tech firms, signed an open letter endorsing open-weight AI, aligning with the trend led by Chinese startups like Moonshot, Alibaba, and DeepSeek.

Meta’s shares rose nearly 3% in premarket trading following the Muse Glimmer release. To advance in the AI domain, Meta plans to unveil Muse Spark 1.2, its cutting-edge model developed by a dedicated superintelligence team. Zuckerberg acknowledged the necessity for the U.S. to reconsider policies on open-weight models and data usage to bolster domestic firms’ competitiveness.

Zuckerberg’s AI essay also introduced a $1 billion US fund to address concerns related to Meta’s data-center expansion impact on communities. The U.S. tech landscape faces challenges in infrastructure development compared to other countries like China. Meta’s strategic investments in AI infrastructure underscore its commitment to innovation and community support amidst evolving regulatory landscapes.
