Hundreds of migrants, part of the 5,000 to 8,000 individuals who entered Ceuta during a recent border crossing surge, gathered at a popular urban beach on Sunday to demand asylum in Spain instead of being returned to Morocco. Many of these migrants were living in challenging conditions on El Trampolin beach or the city’s periphery due to the overwhelming strain on Ceuta’s resources.

Ayoub Elarroud from Tetouan, Morocco, highlighted the hardships they faced, mentioning sleeping by the sea in cold and unsanitary conditions with restricted access to the city center by the police. The protesters displayed Spanish flags and banners advocating against returning to Morocco, emphasizing their humanity and calling for a solution to their situation.

The migrants engaged in various activities at the beach, from washing clothes to fishing using makeshift bamboo rods. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska clarified that irregularly entering migrants would not be allowed to stay in Ceuta, travel to mainland Spain, or obtain legal status, except in rare cases of extreme vulnerability.

Ceuta’s medical services were under immense strain, with diseases like infectious diarrhea and scabies spreading, and an increase in violence-related injuries reported. Health Minister Monica Garcia refuted claims of a collapse in local health services but acknowledged the pressure they were facing.

Migrants interviewed cited poor working conditions in Morocco as the driving force behind their journey to Ceuta. Many, like Mohammed Ouanzar, expressed their struggles with low wages and lack of opportunities back home. Others, such as Emmanuel from Nigeria, embarked on perilous journeys seeking a better life for their families.

The migrants’ stories reflect a mix of economic hardship, persecution, and the pursuit of a brighter future, underscoring the complexities surrounding the migrant crisis in Ceuta.
