NDP Leader Avi Lewis commenced a three-day caucus meeting by criticizing the Carney government for neglecting regular Canadians. Lewis highlighted the government’s focus on prioritizing powerful corporations over the needs of ordinary citizens. He, along with five NDP MPs, engaged with union representatives, affordable housing advocates, and city food bank leaders in Toronto.

During a news conference with these stakeholders present, Lewis emphasized the government’s substantial investments in projects like a new West Coast pipeline and military spending while neglecting the pressing issues faced by everyday Canadians. He called for reforms in employment insurance, better wage supports for workers affected by trade disputes, increased affordable housing initiatives, rent controls, and the establishment of publicly operated grocery stores offering affordable food options.

Lewis underscored the urgency of addressing affordability challenges in Toronto, a city grappling with escalating living costs. The federal NDP aims to revitalize its presence, particularly in Toronto, following setbacks from the 2025 election and leadership transitions.

Despite not securing seats in a recent byelection, Lewis expressed optimism about the party’s resurgence, citing improved vote shares in specific Toronto ridings. He emphasized the ongoing party rebuilding efforts and the positive momentum observed in recent electoral outcomes.

With a focus on potential Toronto seats, especially in areas like Davenport and Parkdale, the NDP is strategically positioning itself for a comeback. The party’s emphasis on key issues such as grocery costs, housing, environmental concerns, and climate action align with the priorities of urban voters.

Through year-round organizing efforts and community engagement initiatives, the NDP under Lewis’s leadership is fostering lasting connections with volunteers and constituents. The party aims to transcend traditional election-driven interactions by building sustainable community relationships that extend beyond political campaigns.

While the recent byelection results were mixed, with varying performances in different regions, the NDP continues its efforts to regain political ground and strengthen its position in the Canadian political landscape.
