Nestle, a major food company, has issued a recall for certain baby formula products in the UK due to potential contamination with a toxin causing food poisoning. The affected batches of SMA infant formula and follow-on formula are deemed unsafe for consumption by infants. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that these products may contain the cereulide toxin, which can lead to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps if ingested.
The issue arose from an ingredient supplied by a prominent provider, according to Nestle. Jane Rawling, the FSA’s incidents head, emphasized that parents and caregivers should refrain from feeding these products to infants or young children. Cereulide is a toxin produced by the food poisoning bacteria Bacillus Cereus, resulting in quick-onset food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and stomach cramps. Urgent measures are being taken to remove the affected products from circulation as a precautionary step.
Nestle has listed the recalled products, including SMA Advanced First Infant Milk, SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk, and others, on their website and the Food Standards Agency’s portal. The company stated that no illnesses linked to the affected products have been confirmed and is collaborating with UK authorities to manage the situation. They assure parents and caregivers of their commitment to ensuring the health and safety of families and babies throughout this process, while also working to minimize any potential disruptions to the supply chain.
