Today, young survivors of the tragic New Year fire incident in Switzerland delivered heartfelt speeches during an official memorial event, moving French President Emmanuel Macron to tears.

Marie Albrecht, Aline Morisoli, and Solal Heimendinger, who were all present during the calamity, shared their experiences on stage at the ceremony held at the “Le Régent” convention center in Martigny, Switzerland. The event, attended by around 1,000 people, including families of the deceased, first responders, and dignitaries, was part of a national day of mourning in Switzerland. It took place nine days after a devastating fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana claimed the lives of 40 individuals, including 20 children, and left 116 others injured. Among the victims were teenagers as young as 14 and two siblings.

Reflecting on the tragic night, Marie Albrecht expressed, “It is with deep emotion that we stand here. What began as a visit to the bar for a final drink turned into a nightmare. The scenes we witnessed were unbearable. Outside, the situation was beyond nightmarish with piercing screams and the overwhelming smell of burning.”

Aline Morisoli addressed the challenges faced by the younger generation, stating, “We are growing up in a world that is often difficult, unfair, and fragile. Despite the adversities, we persevere and fight for our beliefs. There is much to be rectified, and we envision a better world. We are proud to see young people advocating for change and urge everyone to continue the fight.”

Expressing gratitude, Solal Heimendinger thanked the emergency services and medical staff, acknowledging their heroic efforts. A poignant moment occurred when approximately 40 firefighters and rescue personnel were honored with a minute’s applause at the ceremony. Meanwhile, hundreds of spectators braved snowy conditions in Crans-Montana to watch a live broadcast of the service, observing a minute of silence in memory of the victims.

During the service, President of the Valais State Council Mathias Reynard extended condolences to the grieving families, acknowledging the tragic turn of events that claimed 40 lives and left many injured. He emphasized the importance of remembering the departed souls and pledged a thorough investigation to seek justice. Federal President Guy Parmelin highlighted the unity of Switzerland in mourning the loss and paid tribute to the victims, noting that they will forever shine in the nation’s collective memory.

The memorial service coincided with the detention of Jacques Moretti, the owner of the bar, for questioning by prosecutors. His wife Jessica was also questioned but later released. The couple faces charges related to the incident, including manslaughter and negligence. The investigation revealed that the fire likely originated in the bar’s basement due to a hazardous combination of materials.

Tragically, seven individuals from the same football club in Lutry perished in the fire, adding to the community’s grief. With a total of 19 nationalities among the victims and the injured, the incident has deeply impacted a diverse group of individuals.

As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the tragedy, questions have been raised about the lack of fire safety inspections at the bar. The community remains united in support of those affected, striving to overcome the profound loss and move forward with resilience.
