A nurse was recently granted a £4,350 out-of-court settlement after sustaining severe burns on a Ryanair flight, describing the incident as unexpected. Denise Elliott, 63, was traveling to Majorca from Bournemouth with friends when she was handed a coffee cup without a lid by a steward due to lack of supply.
According to Denise, she placed the cup on the tray table, which she criticized as unsuitable. This incident highlights a concerning trend of passengers experiencing similar injuries due to the design of tray tables on airplanes.
Denise recounted the moment when the coffee spilled on her thighs, disputing Ryanair’s claim that lids were available. She expressed disappointment in the airline’s response to her injuries, stating that she had to administer first aid to herself.
Her legal claim under the Montreal Convention, managed by Hudgell Solicitors, was initially denied by Ryanair before a settlement was reached. Denise emphasized the lack of urgency from the airline and expressed doubts about their commitment to change.
Tracy Stansfield, a senior associate solicitor at Hudgell Solicitors, emphasized the importance of holding airlines accountable for passenger safety. She highlighted the growing issue of in-flight burns due to tray table designs, urging airlines to address this for the well-being of travelers.
The Mirror has requested a comment from Ryanair regarding this incident.
