An individual passionate about football managed to raise more than £260,000 for charity by selling samosas. A mother showcased immense bravery by diving into the sea to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. Additionally, a five-year-old girl, who displayed remarkable courage, successfully rebuilt her life after losing both legs.
These exceptional individuals were among the distinguished winners celebrated at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a vast pool of public nominations, these everyday heroes were recognized at a prestigious ceremony in London, co-hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.
The event was further enhanced by a memorable surprise. P&O Cruises, the new principal sponsor of the Pride of Britain Awards, generously gifted each of the 12 winners a cruise holiday, providing them with an opportunity to create lasting memories with their families.
We had the chance to speak with three heroes who embarked on a 14-night Caribbean voyage aboard Britannia, visiting eight tropical islands and indulging in top-notch entertainment.
Aiyla Mota, Child of Courage
Aiyla Mota fell ill shortly before her fourth birthday with what initially appeared as a common childhood infection. However, the illness rapidly developed into sepsis, leading to multiple organ failure. To save her life, doctors had to amputate both her legs and five fingers.
Despite these challenges, five-year-old Aiyla made a remarkable recovery, astonishing those around her with her courage and positive attitude. Her resilience and optimism earned her a prestigious Pride of Britain Award, making her one of the youngest recipients ever.
Eulanda, Aiyla’s proud mother from Middlesex, aged 28, shared, “Aiyla has always been a vibrant personality, and despite her adversities, she has not lost her spark. In fact, she exudes even more confidence and energy than before. She’s like a magnified version of herself!”
After being presented with her award by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family embarked on a Caribbean cruise, exploring Britannia’s numerous restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and swimming pools.
Reflecting on the experience, Eulanda expressed her gratitude for the incredible holiday, emphasizing the family’s first cruise experience and the abundance of activities available on board.
Emily Greenwood, Outstanding Bravery
During a leisurely walk along a Cornish beach with her disabled son, Isaac, Emily Greenwood witnessed a dramatic incident unfold. A 10-year-old boy surfing on a bodyboard got caught in a riptide, dragging him out to sea. In a moment of bravery, Emily leaped into the frigid water to rescue the imperiled individuals.
Battling freezing temperatures and strong waves, Emily swam 400 meters to reach the distressed boy and his mother, ultimately guiding them back to safety using the bodyboard as a flotation device.
Emily’s courageous act earned her a Pride of Britain Award, leading to a well-deserved Caribbean cruise. Accompanied by her children and a friend, Emily cherished the opportunity to unwind and explore the picturesque Caribbean beaches.
Recalling the cruise experience, Emily appreciated the excellent service and accommodations provided, especially the special considerations made for her son’s dietary needs, offering her a rare break from her caregiving responsibilities.
