“Post Office Horizon Scandal: Fight for Justice Continues”

An individual affected by the Post Office Horizon scandal shared her struggle for justice after her husband had his conviction overturned.

Glenys Eaton and her husband David, former sub-postmasters, served a six-month jail sentence due to discrepancies in branch accounts identified by the now discredited Horizon software. While Mr. Eaton’s conviction was annulled in 2024, Mrs. Eaton’s legal team had to threaten officials with a judicial review before recently being informed that her conviction could also be quashed.

Speaking to MPs, Mrs. Eaton described her time in prison as “absolutely horrible” and emphasized that they are not dishonest individuals. Despite her husband being offered an initial compensation of £200,000, Mrs. Eaton is still awaiting resolution. She expressed empathy for others facing similar situations without the support to fight for justice.

The couple managed their Post Office branch before the introduction of the Horizon system in 2000 and immediately noticed significant shortfalls. Both were arrested in 2001 for the same offense and subsequently prosecuted.

Mr. Eaton highlighted that evidence supporting their innocence was apparent from the beginning, stressing the importance of their mutual support during the legal battle. He expressed concern for others unaware of avenues to address similar issues and feeling neglected.

During a session with the Business and Trade Committee, it was suggested that there could be numerous undisclosed victims of the Horizon scandal, either not stepping forward or facing delays in their cases. Delays in resolving potential convictions were attributed to prolonged requests for additional information by government departments, causing frustration among affected individuals.

David Enright from Howe and Co Solicitors, representing the Eatons, described the extensive efforts required to overturn Mrs. Eaton’s conviction, including persistent communication with government entities. He urged recognition of the widespread nature of similar cases, emphasizing the need for comprehensive resolution.

Neil Hudgell of Hudgell Solicitors, representing other victims, highlighted the emotional distress experienced by clients due to events from two decades ago, often lacking supporting documentation for their claims.

Despite the government allocating £1.8 billion for the Horizon scandal, primarily for compensating victims, Fujitsu Services, the company responsible for the Horizon system, has not earmarked any funds for potential compensation, according to Paul Patterson, a company director.

Mr. Patterson acknowledged ongoing issues with the Horizon system, admitting to past errors and indicating a commitment to contribute to compensations after a comprehensive report on the scandal. MPs were informed that Fujitsu continued to benefit from significant government contracts despite the scandal, leading to public perception of a severe miscarriage of justice.

The ongoing debate regarding Fujitsu’s financial contribution to compensations led to criticism from Labour MP Liam Byrne, who accused the company of exploiting the situation. Mr. Patterson defended Fujitsu, stating they are open to government decisions on contract extensions but clarified they would not pursue new business opportunities.
