Renowned political figure Preston Manning is gearing up for Alberta’s upcoming fall referendum by spearheading a public forum aimed at addressing Western Canada’s historical grievances with the federal government. The virtual symposium is scheduled for September 19 and 20 and will be co-chaired by Manning, the former leader of the Reform Party, and ex-B.C. premier Gordon Campbell.
The event coincides with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s plans to present 10 referendum questions to voters on October 19, including the crucial decision on whether the province should continue its association with Canada or proceed with a second binding referendum on separation.
Manning emphasized that the forum’s objective is to provide educational insights and encourage voter engagement sans the usual partisan disputes that often dominate public forums. He stressed the significance of active participation in the referendum, irrespective of one’s stance.
Distinguishing this forum from past initiatives like the Alberta Next panel and the Fair Deal panel, Manning highlighted its inclusive nature, aiming to present diverse viewpoints without bias. The forum’s scope extends beyond Alberta, with plans for a subsequent session in October to formulate recommendations post the referendum, followed by sharing these proposals with policymakers across Western Canada.
Manning underlined that concerns regarding federal government intervention resonate beyond Alberta, making the forum’s outcomes pertinent to other provinces. Emphasizing a democratic approach devoid of partisanship, Manning aims to showcase a constructive democratic process that counters the prevalent polarization seen in legislative bodies.
The forum also aims to shed light on Smith’s additional nine ballot questions, covering various issues such as restricting social services for certain immigrants and advocating for constitutional discussions on Senate abolition and provincial judicial appointments. Smith views these proposals as a potential political compromise to address Alberta’s grievances with Ottawa while affirming her commitment to Canada.
Manning suggested that a positive vote on these propositions would embolden provinces to challenge federal-provincial jurisdiction boundaries, particularly in areas like immigration. The forum intends to serve as a platform for constructive dialogue and potentially reinvigorate public trust in democratic institutions, especially among disenchanted youth.
