Protesters in Minneapolis are calling for the removal of federal immigration officers following a fatal shooting involving a US Border Patrol agent. The incident sparked renewed protests in freezing temperatures, with demonstrators demanding justice for the victim, identified as Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse who had protested against Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
After the shooting, tensions escalated as protesters clashed with federal officers who used force to disperse the crowd. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the agents fired “defensive shots” after a man with a handgun resisted their attempts to disarm him.
This marks the second deadly shooting by federal agents in Minneapolis this month, raising concerns among eyewitnesses who dispute the official narrative. Minneapolis Police Chief confirmed that Pretti was a legal gun owner with a valid permit.
President Trump criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey, accusing them of inciting unrest. However, questions remain about the circumstances leading to the shooting, with conflicting reports about whether Pretti was armed during the confrontation.
Despite the cold weather, thousands gathered for the ‘Ice Out of Minnesota’ protest, and further clashes occurred during subsequent demonstrations. In Los Angeles, a vigil was held in remembrance of the victims of ICE actions.
