A unique David Bowie self-portrait, complete with his handprints, is set to be auctioned for the first time at Sotheby’s Modern British and Irish Art Day Auction on October 15. The artwork, created by the iconic singer in 1996, is expected to fetch between £35,000 to £55,000. Originally given as a gift to his gallery owner in St Ives, the painting has now been unveiled to the public in London after being held in a private collection for thirty years.

Part of a series of eight large-scale portraits from the mid-1990s, this particular self-portrait is noted for its expressive nature. Sotheby’s senior specialist, Jen Hardie, described the piece as capturing Bowie in a moment of creativity and self-reflection, providing a personal connection to the artist through his direct gaze and handprints on the composition.

Featuring bold colors and a rich aesthetic, the painting showcases Bowie’s prowess as a visual artist in the 1990s, offering viewers a different perspective of the musician and cultural icon. The self-portrait, done on paper, highlights Bowie’s distinct gaze with unevenly sized pupils and his unique handprints at the bottom of the artwork, adding an intimate touch to the piece.

For collectors looking to own a piece of Bowie’s legacy, this upcoming auction presents a rare opportunity to acquire a hands-on piece of history from the legendary artist.
