Wildlife enthusiast Terry Chettle captured an unexpected encounter between a river otter and a green heron at the Grimsby Wetlands in early August. The Beamsville, Ontario resident was surprised by the otter’s presence, as they are not commonly seen in the area. As the otter moved to a log and began grooming itself, Chettle seized the opportunity to photograph the playful display.

During the same outing, Bruce and Laurie Mackenzie crossed paths with Chettle at the wetland, where he pointed out the rare otter sighting. Bruce Mackenzie noted that such sightings near the wetlands are infrequent, with the August 3 incident being the first in recent memory. The wetlands, managed by the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, encompass approximately 12 hectares on Lake Ontario’s South Shore, formerly a sewage storage site now transformed into a popular destination for hiking and bird watching.

The appearance of the otter is seen as a positive sign of habitat restoration and water quality by Mackenzie, as rare species like the least bittern have been spotted in the wetlands before. He expressed excitement over the diverse species thriving in the rewilded Golden Horseshoe region.

Laura Timms, a program manager at Credit Valley Conservation, hailed otters as a conservation success story, citing their resurgence in the Credit River watershed. Timms highlighted the increasing frequency of documented otter sightings in various conservation areas this year, including instances of otters giving birth to pups.

While river otter populations faced declines in the past due to hunting and habitat destruction, efforts to improve environmental conditions have led to a resurgence in North America. Timms emphasized the importance of ongoing conservation efforts to protect biodiversity and restore habitats to support the thriving of various species, not just otters.
