A new short film, “Big Man,” featuring R&B star Stormzy, has been shot entirely on an iPhone, giving it a cinematic look despite the unconventional filming method. Directed by Aneil Karia, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, the movie showcases the story of Tenzman, an experienced musician, and two spirited children who unexpectedly enter his life.

Karia expressed excitement about the innovative process of using an iPhone for narrative filmmaking, citing the device’s compact size and versatility as key advantages. The film’s intimate feel was enhanced by the iPhone’s portability, allowing for a closer connection with the characters in smaller settings.

“Big Man” is now accessible on YouTube, offering viewers a glimpse into the capabilities of smartphone filmmaking. The iPhone 16 Pro used for the project introduces advanced features such as cinematic slow-motion capture at 4K 120 fps, enhancing the visual quality. Additionally, the Cinematic mode adds depth and blur effects to the footage, along with improved low-light performance.

Director of Photography, Stuart Bentley, emphasized the democratization of filmmaking through smartphone technology, highlighting how anyone with a passion for cinema can now create compelling films using readily available tools. The iPhone’s versatile camera offers a range of features, including dynamic focus adjustments, high frame rates, and exceptional low-light performance, pushing the boundaries of mobile cinematography.

Notably, this isn’t the first instance where Apple devices have been used for professional filming. In 2023, Apple showcased a 30-minute keynote shot entirely on an iPhone 15 Pro, demonstrating the growing influence of mobile technology in the film industry.
