The trend of illegally streaming content from platforms like Sky is on the rise as households in the UK seek ways to cut costs. Many are turning to ‘dodgy’ devices like Fire TV Sticks for cheap access to sports and movies. However, this may lead to unexpected financial consequences.

Recent research by BeStreamWise reveals that 40% of illegal streamers surveyed have fallen victim to financial fraud, with some facing bills as high as £1,680. Hackers exploit personal data provided during unofficial streaming sign-ups to steal credit card information and commit fraud.

Despite the allure of saving money, the risks associated with illegal streaming are substantial. On average, illegal streamers save £13.38 per month but stand to lose significantly more due to security breaches. Ethical hacker Rob Shapland warns that accessing illegal streams exposes users to the theft of personal and financial data.

In addition to financial losses, many illegal streamers have encountered security threats such as malware and pop-ups. Nearly two-thirds of those who engaged in illegal streaming reported security scares, highlighting the dangers of this practice.

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Warbey from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit warns that illegal streaming not only harms the entertainment industry but also puts users at risk of cybercrime and fraud. Initiatives like BeStreamWise aim to educate the public on online safety and the importance of consuming content legally.

Efforts are ongoing to disrupt illegal streaming activities and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions, ensuring a safer online environment for all users.
