As a child in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV show based on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she watched “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, especially admiring actress Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the series during the 1990s. When Czajka discovered that Ruffman would be attending a fan convention in P.E.I. centered around the show, she eagerly purchased a ticket to attend.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood equivalent of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the convention. Enthusiastic fans of “Road to Avonlea” from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out event. The acclaimed Canadian series, broadcast in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.
The show revolved around the story of young Sarah Stanley, played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her deceased mother’s relatives at the start of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the series garnered a dedicated following over the years.
The convention spanned three days and featured activities such as oyster and wine tastings, along with panel discussions involving the show’s cast and crew. Attendees also took excursions to filming locations across the Island, including Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the Cavendish house that inspired her renowned work, “Anne of Green Gables.”
Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, noted that the show’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to provide an escape for viewers seeking themes of kindness, friendship, and camaraderie. He expressed optimism about the show continuing to attract new audiences in the future.
Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, highlighted the emotional connection shared between the fans and the show’s cast and crew. She mentioned that the bond with her character, Olivia, still lingers, evoking occasional thoughts about Olivia’s hypothetical current endeavors.
Czajka, now revisiting the series with her three children, expressed delight in being able to share the show with her kids, emphasizing the rarity of finding a program suitable for family viewing. She emphasized the show’s timeless appeal that continues to resonate across generations.
