Another cat has been diagnosed with raccoon rabies in Saint-Anicet, Quebec, within the Montérégie region, marking the second case this summer. According to Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre, three individuals required preventive treatment after interacting with the infected animal. This incident follows the recent discovery of a rabies-infected cat in Godmanchester, also located in the Montérégie region.

The ongoing spread of raccoon rabies in the Estrie, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec regions underscores the critical importance of maintaining up-to-date vaccinations for pets. Health officials emphasize the necessity of preventing pets from wandering outdoors unsupervised and advise the public to refrain from contact with unfamiliar domestic and wild animals, regardless of their appearance or health status.

In the event of a bite, scratch, or potential exposure to a rabid animal’s saliva, individuals are urged to wash the affected area thoroughly for 10 to 15 minutes and promptly contact Info-Santé at 811. Rapid administration of preventive treatment is essential to avert the onset of the disease.

Animals affected by rabies may display various symptoms, such as altered behavior, aggression, biting tendencies, isolation, decreased appetite, excessive drooling, or an unsteady gait. Pet owners are advised to isolate animals exhibiting these signs and promptly consult a veterinarian for assessment.

The Environment Ministry disclosed the initial case of raccoon rabies in Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham in the Centre-du-Québec region. Residents in the Eastern Townships, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec are requested to report any deceased, injured, disoriented, paralyzed, or unusually aggressive raccoons, skunks, or foxes through an online form. Those residing outside these regions can report potentially rabid wild animals by contacting the Environment Ministry at 1 877 346-6763.
