An inquest revealed that an 84-year-old man, Robert Jobson, tragically killed his 69-year-old wife, Rosemary, by shooting her twice at their residence in Thornton Curtis, North Lincolnshire. The couple, well-known for their participation in shooting competitions representing England, were discovered deceased on July 14, 2023.

Before the fatal incident, Jobson had been arrested following a reported assault by his wife, who later became the victim of the shooting outside their home. Subsequently, Jobson took his own life in a shed adjacent to their property. The inquest disclosed that the couple initially met during hunting and horseback riding activities before establishing a shooting school together.

Prior to the tragic event, Rosemary had contacted the authorities on June 20, 2023, expressing her intent to divorce Jobson and raising concerns about firearms in their household, leading to the removal of the guns a few days later. Despite being temporarily released on bail by Humberside Police after the initial arrest, Jobson was ordered to refrain from any contact with his wife as he underwent psychiatric evaluations due to his mental health issues.

During the inquest at Cleethorpes Town Hall, it was revealed that Jobson suspected his wife of having an affair with their mutual friend, Peter Hrynyk, who denied any romantic involvement with Rosemary. Following a brief stay with Hrynyk, Rosemary returned home to collect personal belongings, only to meet a tragic fate resulting from gunshot wounds to her head and neck.

The coroner, Jayne Wilkes, described the case as “particularly shocking,” attributing Rosemary’s death to a deliberate act by her husband, leading to a verdict of unlawful killing with premeditation. Paula O’Donnell, Rosemary’s daughter from a previous marriage, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her mother and emphasized her encouragement for Rosemary to leave Jobson for her own safety and well-being.
