Australia’s temporary captain, Steve Smith, has spoken out following a tense moment with England’s pace bowler Jofra Archer during the final stage of play at the Gabba. The visitors needed to dismiss the Aussies for less than 64 runs, but Smith secured the victory by hitting the winning runs for the second consecutive Test.
When Smith entered the pitch, Australia was at 41-2, and he led the team to success by scoring an impressive 23 runs off just nine balls. He struck two massive sixes and two fours in that brief period, dominating Archer by scoring 15 runs off only five deliveries.
The intense exchange between the two players occurred during a heated over at the Gabba, with Archer visibly frustrated after being hit for a boundary by Smith. However, Smith let his batting prowess speak for itself by smashing Archer for a six to deep fine leg and over the boundary. England’s bowlers were left battered and bruised by the experience at the Gabba.
In the following over, Smith hit another six to seal the victory, propelling Australia to a commanding 2-0 lead as they head into the next Test in Adelaide.
When questioned about the on-field altercation with Archer, Smith chose to keep the details private, stating it was good banter and enjoyable competition. Archer’s frustration was evident as he struggled with the pink ball throughout the second Test.
England’s bowling attack, not living up to their potential as seen on day one in Perth, failed to perform at their best. The hosts were set a target of 334 runs to chase down, which they comfortably achieved with 511 runs on the board, thanks to significant contributions from various players.
Despite a late fight from Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, England fell short as Australia bowled them out for 241. Travis Head and Jake Weatherald made quick progress in the chase before Smith’s explosive batting display.
Reflecting on his performance, Smith expressed that it felt right to play aggressively and finish the game swiftly. He commended his team’s exceptional play and acknowledged the key partnerships that secured their advantage in the match.
As the battle for the Ashes intensifies, England faces the pressure of needing a win in Adelaide to stay in contention. The third Test is set to begin on December 17.
