Striking updated maps display the predicted path of the approaching Storm Goretti, which is poised to bring a combination of snow, ice, rain, and gusts of up to 100mph. Amber weather alerts have been issued nationwide due to the ‘multi hazard’ weather event triggered by Storm Goretti. Additionally, a red warning, signaling a danger to life, has been specifically issued for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, prompting emergency alerts to be sent to residents advising them to remain indoors.

Meteorologists anticipate substantial snowfall, with some areas in the Midlands expected to receive up to 30cm of snow as Storm Goretti advances from the southwest. Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill cautioned that the storm’s impact would encompass wet, windy, and wintry conditions across various regions of the UK. He elaborated that the collision of the incoming rain with the existing cold air mass would likely result in significant snow accumulation in central and southern parts of the country.

The UK Health Security Agency has raised amber health alerts for cold weather, effective until January 11, highlighting the expected severe consequences on health and social care services. Authorities are concerned about a potential rise in fatalities, especially among individuals aged 65 and older or those with underlying health conditions, with the possibility of adverse effects on younger age groups as well.

As depicted on the weather map for this evening, Storm Goretti is poised to blanket most of England and Wales by 6 pm. Subsequently, heavy snowfall is projected across Wales and the Midlands by 9 pm, with cities like Birmingham likely to experience snowfall exceeding two inches per hour. London, Essex, and Kent are expected to face heavy rainfall around midnight, while Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire may experience Arctic-like conditions early Friday morning. Despite some clearing in Wales and the East Midlands, the storm is expected to persist further east at 6 am. By its retreat towards East Anglia and the continent, isolated snow showers are anticipated in Lancashire, the northeast, and Suffolk. The storm’s lingering effects will still be noticeable in parts of the country by noon tomorrow.
