A significant weather event named Storm Goretti has prompted travel advisories across the UK due to anticipated snow and ice disrupting the transportation system. This storm made landfall on Wednesday, affecting various regions with icy and snowy conditions. The Met Office issued yellow and amber alerts, with the latter cautioning of potentially hazardous travel conditions, particularly on snow and ice-covered roads.

In severely impacted areas, certain services may be halted or delayed, prompting authorities to advise against unnecessary travel. Transport for Wales has informed rail passengers of service suspensions or significant delays caused by the storm, especially in regions under an amber snow warning where snowfall could exceed 30cm.

The affected regions include Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Powys, Rhondda, Cynon Taf, Torfaen, and Wrexham. Transport for Wales has adjusted timetables in these areas, with some services suspended from 3pm onwards. Following the warning’s activation at 8pm, services have been modified to operate at reduced frequencies.

The amber warning is expected to remain in effect until 9am on Friday, as the Met Office forecasts rain associated with Storm Goretti transitioning into snowfall. Snow accumulation is predicted to start in elevated areas before spreading to lower levels, potentially reaching up to 30cm in certain locations. The Met Office cautioned that heavy snowfall is likely, particularly in higher terrain, and disruptions may persist even after the snow ceases.
