A recent study by MoneySuperMarket revealed that almost half of households are being mindful of their energy consumption this winter due to soaring energy bills. The survey found that 45% of respondents have delayed turning on their heating compared to the previous year. Additionally, 10% reported having disagreements with family members over heating usage, with 6% expressing concerns about the health impact of insufficient heating at home.

The research comes ahead of Ofgem’s upcoming price cap adjustment, which will raise the average yearly bill to £1,758 for many households. Despite a marginal 0.2% increase, bills have surged by 50% since the cap’s inception in 2019, putting financial strain on households.

More than half of the surveyed households indicated that their cost of living has worsened in the past year, with 31% having to make financial sacrifices. Laura Hinton, MoneySuperMarket Energy representative, highlighted the financial pressures faced by households during the holiday season, advising on energy-saving strategies such as prudent heating practices, using energy-efficient appliances, and reducing decorative lighting.

Households can alleviate energy costs by exploring fixed energy deals, which could lead to savings of up to £395 and shield against future price hikes. Installing a smart meter allows real-time monitoring of energy usage, aiding in identifying power-intensive appliances. Additionally, Energy Saving Trust offers tips to lower energy expenses during the festive period.

Implementing measures like adjusting boiler temperature settings, using draught excluders for chimneys, optimizing dishwasher and washing machine usage, and embracing energy-efficient lighting options can collectively contribute to significant annual savings. Other recommendations include managing thermostat settings, utilizing electric ovens efficiently, and practicing energy-saving habits like using timers for lights and switching off devices at the plug.

To further reduce energy consumption, households are advised to let leftovers cool before freezing, opt for rechargeable batteries to minimize waste, and consider energy-efficient practices during the holiday season. By adopting these strategies, households can mitigate the impact of rising energy costs and promote sustainable energy usage.
