Tammara Thibeault’s boxing journey has been about embracing the present moment. When the pivotal moment of her career arrived on August 8, she stayed focused on taking it one round at a time. It wasn’t until a few days later, holding the belts in her hands, that the reality of her achievement sunk in.

After defeating Australia’s Desley Robinson by unanimous decision in Orlando, Florida, with all three judges scoring the fight 100-90, the 29-year-old from Shawinigan, Quebec, expressed her astonishment at her accomplishment to CBC Sports. Thibeault became the first Canadian woman to claim a unified professional world champion title by adding Robinson’s IBF and WBO middleweight titles to the Ring Magazine belt, all achieved in just five professional fights, making her the quickest fighter in history to secure a Ring Magazine world championship.

Thibeault credits her ability to remain present in the moment to her training. Despite facing adversity during the fight, including significant bleeding from a headbutt, she maintained her composure and secured the victory by exhibiting a dominant performance.

While pursuing her professional boxing career, Thibeault also engaged in Olympic-style boxing activities last year, winning a Canadian amateur title and achieving silver at the Boxing World Cup in Guiyang, China. Training with national-team boxers from India and New Zealand in Belfast exposed her to diverse boxing styles, enhancing her adaptability and problem-solving skills.

Embracing the creative freedom that professional boxing offers, Thibeault enjoys expressing her personality through her outfits and values the opportunity to showcase her individuality. Representing Canada has always been a source of pride for her, but professional boxing allows her to reveal more of her true self to the world.

Thibeault remains focused on her goal of competing in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, acknowledging that she must earn her spot on the podium. Despite a setback at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, she views her professional and Olympic careers as distinct challenges within the realm of boxing.

The overwhelming support and reactions following Thibeault’s victory have been humbling for her, demonstrating the impact of her success on people across Canada and within the boxing community. Her message to young athletes is simple: persevere, learn from mistakes, and trust in oneself.

Looking ahead, Thibeault’s next major event is the Pan American Championships in October in Pueblo, Mexico. Prioritizing recovery after her recent triumph, she plans to rest for the next few weeks to ensure she is rejuvenated and prepared for the upcoming challenges. While her titles may have elevated her status in boxing, Thibeault remains committed to tackling each challenge one step at a time, with many more accomplishments on the horizon.
