The Chief of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation, Kele Antoine, expressed the profound impact of a recent shooting incident in Fort Simpson, N.W.T. that resulted in one individual sustaining injuries. Antoine emphasized the tight-knit nature of the small community, where everyone is interconnected and affected by such events.

He called upon community members with any relevant information to step forward, highlighting the collaborative effort needed beyond law enforcement. RCMP responded to the incident after receiving reports of a man being shot in a residential backyard around 1:40 a.m. The injured individual was promptly attended to at the local health center before being transferred to Yellowknife for further medical care.

Authorities stated that the shooting seemed to be targeted and assured the public that there was no immediate threat. While Antoine speculated that the incident was connected to drugs, this has not been officially confirmed by the RCMP. He stressed the necessity for sustained funding and resources for local law enforcement to effectively combat violence and address the drug trade within the community, emphasizing the need for a long-term strategy rather than short-term solutions.
