Two teenagers tragically lost their lives when the hand-dug sand tunnel they were in collapsed on them, causing shock and grief in the community.
Best friends George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, both 14 years old, had been working on the tunnel for two weeks. The incident turned a typical childhood adventure into a devastating loss, according to Jasmine Watts, George’s mother.
The boys, described as inseparable, were trapped inside the collapsed tunnel on Sunday, January 11, at Sportsman Park in Inverness, Florida. Concerned parents could not reach them and alerted authorities. It took about 30 minutes for paramedics to reach and rescue the boys, who were buried four to five feet deep. Derrick was declared dead at the hospital, while George, unconscious upon arrival, passed away early on January 13.
A GoFundMe page was created to support the grieving families. Jasmine Watts shared that George and Derrick were like siblings, growing up together with love, laughter, and a strong bond.
Coach Corey Edwards remembered the boys as outdoor enthusiasts who enjoyed a technology-free lifestyle, highlighting the unpredictability of the tragic accident. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office expressed solidarity with the families and the community, emphasizing the need for support and unity during the healing process.
