President Donald Trump has raised eyebrows with a bold proposal to offer $1 million to each resident of Greenland in an unprecedented move to gain control over the island.
According to a report by The Daily Mail, this extraordinary proposal could come with a hefty price tag of £42.5 billion for the United States, considering Greenland’s population of approximately 57,000 people. If the residents opt for U.S. affiliation, the $1 million USD offer would equate to around £750,000 or €850,000.
Despite the significant cost, Trump, who oversees a defense budget of £595 billion, may view this as a reasonable investment.
The proposal comes in the wake of the President’s announcement on Wednesday, January 22, where he reversed his stance on imposing tariffs on eight European nations to leverage U.S. control over Greenland. Trump, after initially expressing interest in acquiring the island, later decided to backtrack on his tariff threats.
In a social media post, Trump revealed that he had reached a tentative agreement with NATO regarding future Arctic security measures, potentially easing the geopolitical tensions surrounding the issue.
Furthermore, discussions are underway on Greenland’s involvement in the Golden Dome missile defense program, a sophisticated system estimated at $175 billion, introducing U.S. weaponry into space for the first time.
During his address, Trump emphasized the strategic significance of Greenland, referring to it as a “cold and poorly located” territory. He highlighted the historical contributions of the U.S. to Europe, particularly during World War II, and stressed the minimal nature of the request compared to the support provided to NATO over the years.
Trump concluded by stating his preference for diplomatic resolutions, asserting that excessive force would not be employed, despite the potential military superiority of the U.S. in the situation.
