President Donald Trump may face opposition from his own military commanders if he attempts to annex Greenland, citing a 75-year-old law. After his recent involvement in detaining Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Trump has displayed escalating hostility towards Greenland, a sovereign region under NATO ally Denmark.
However, a law from 1951 could spark a revolt within his generals, potentially thwarting the 79-year-old US leader’s territorial aspirations. This law, part of the 1951 Uniform Code of Military Justice, empowers soldiers to refuse an unlawful order, leading Trump’s generals to potentially resign if instructed to take control of Greenland.
Furthermore, each US soldier is granted a moral conscience under the First Amendment of the US Constitution, complicating what some perceive as Trump’s expansionist ambitions in the Arctic, as per reports from the Express.
The revelation of this law precedes Trump’s upcoming appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he is set to deliver a speech while US aircraft head towards Greenland.
Speculation abounds about Trump’s intentions for Greenland, whether he plans to capture it by force or continue his strategy of imposing sanctions on nations that oppose him. Countries affected by these sanctions, unveiled earlier this month, include the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland.
These tariffs will initiate at 10 percent on all US imports, escalating to 25 percent by June if the US fails to acquire Greenland. When questioned by NBC about his intentions, Trump confirmed he would act on these warnings, suggesting that Europe should redirect its focus eastward rather than westward.
Trump stated, “I will, 100 percent… Europe should concentrate on the conflict with Russia and Ukraine because, frankly, you see what that’s gotten them… That’s what Europe should prioritize – not Greenland.”
Meanwhile, concerns are mounting in Greenland, the epicenter of the latest Trump controversy, about what lies ahead for the island in the upcoming months. Representatives from Greenland’s five political parties released a joint statement on behalf of residents, emphasizing that Greenlanders have no desire to become part of the USA.
They emphasized, “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders. The future of Greenland must be determined by Greenlanders. No other nation can interfere in this decision-making process.”
Despite these sentiments, Trump seemed non-committal when asked about his intentions towards Greenland before departing for Davos. He responded, “You’ll find out.”
