U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in positive discussions in Kyiv on Sunday during their inaugural official trip to Ukraine, aiming to halt Russia’s extensive invasion that has persisted for over four and a half years.

The American delegation’s visit to Ukraine comes after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day, amid heightened aerial assaults from both sides. Efforts by Washington to cease hostilities have faced setbacks, with the Trump administration’s recent focus on the Iran conflict.

In recent times, Russia has deployed high-speed, jet-powered drones, leading to frequent air-raid sirens in Kyiv, impacting daily life. Ukrainian forces have encountered challenges in advancing along the 1,250-kilometer front line.

After two rounds of talks with U.S. officials, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the objective of achieving a “just, equitable peace” to prevent any future aggression against Ukraine. Zelenskyy appreciated the American envoys’ visit to Kyiv, their first to Ukraine, and announced the involvement of national security advisors from Britain, France, and Germany in the upcoming discussions.

“We had significant, substantive, and crucial discussions, and we are highly encouraged,” remarked Witkoff regarding the talks. Kushner highlighted President Donald Trump’s emphasis on not only ending the ongoing conflict but also establishing conditions for lasting peace.

A Ukrainian official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the discussions largely focused on strategies for navigating the winter season and implementing necessary actions before then.

The meeting in Moscow on Saturday lasted over three hours, with no major breakthroughs announced. While acknowledging the battlefield situation in Ukraine, Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the talks as constructive but did not disclose specific outcomes. Discussions also touched upon economic matters and potential collaborative projects benefiting both Russia and America.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine persisted despite a mutual agreement between Putin and Zelenskyy to halt strikes on each other’s capitals during the negotiations. The exchange of fire resulted in casualties on both sides, with Russian drone attacks causing casualties in various Ukrainian regions and Ukrainian forces intercepting drones and missiles launched by Russia.

In Kyiv, a moment of silence was observed in honor of Ukraine’s fallen soldiers, with individuals like Nataliia Lipei, who lost her son in 2022, expressing hope for a peaceful resolution through the ongoing talks in Moscow and Kyiv. However, not everyone shared the same optimism, with some, like Oleksandr Pastukhov, expressing skepticism about the potential outcomes of the envoys’ visit.

Pope Leo also reiterated his plea for peace in Ukraine, underscoring the importance of diplomatic efforts to yield tangible results.
