The United Kingdom has recently acquired an innovative weapon system capable of firing eight rounds per minute and reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. Known as the RCH 155, this cutting-edge weapon is mounted on a BOXER armored vehicle, offering a range of 70 km. Through a £52 million contract with Germany, the UK has gained a strategic advantage with the RCH 155, drawing insights from the conflict in Ukraine.

This advanced technology can cover a distance of 700 km without refueling, equivalent to a journey from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike conventional artillery that requires stopping to fire, the RCH 155 can engage targets while on the move, enhancing speed and evading enemy threats. Featuring state-of-the-art automation, the weapon can be operated by just two crew members and engage targets in any direction without repositioning.

Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, emphasized the significance of the British Army’s upcoming artillery capabilities, highlighting the ability to fire on the move and draw lessons from the Ukrainian conflict. The deployment of the RCH 155 enables the army to engage targets from a safe distance and swiftly maneuver to avoid retaliation, reflecting the evolving strategies informed by past experiences.

Currently, soldiers utilize 14 Archer artillery systems as interim replacements for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. The collaboration between the UK and Germany under the contract includes data and facility sharing, ensuring both countries access top-tier equipment and expertise.

Edward Cutts, the Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, underscored the collaborative nature of the joint demonstrator program, showcasing the effectiveness of the Trinity House Agreement. By partnering with Germany, the UK accelerates the delivery of cutting-edge artillery capabilities efficiently and cost-effectively, fostering interoperability between the two forces crucial for NATO’s collective defense.

In recent events, Defence Secretary John Healey issued a stern warning to Vladimir Putin, affirming the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and investing in mobilizing British troops promptly in case of a peace agreement. This commitment follows the launch of a new military intelligence service in response to escalating threats such as cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and risks to global maritime trade routes.
