As discussions emerge about training “gap year soldiers” for deployment in conflict zones, The Mirror examines the potential scenario of conscription in the UK by 2026 based on expert insights.

Scheduled to open for enrollment in March 2026, individuals under 25 may have the opportunity to participate in a new gap year military program aimed at bolstering army recruitment and fostering essential life skills amidst concerns over Russian threats. Drawing inspiration from a comparable initiative in Australia, the program is set to commence with an initial group of 150 participants, with aspirations to scale up to over 1,000 annually.

Young civilians will be introduced to military life and provided with transferrable skills, even if they opt not to pursue a full-time military career. While there is no obligatory commitment to enlist permanently, those opting to remain in the Armed Forces can receive further training for operational deployment.

This development coincides with recent actions by Russia rejecting a peace agreement in Ukraine and labeling British soldiers as “legitimate military targets,” heightening concerns of a potential significant airstrike on Kyiv. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have collaborated on a new strategy to establish military “hubs” in Ukraine as a defensive measure, provoking disapproval from the Kremlin.

Notably, a forthcoming gap year scheme, initially reported by the iPaper, has garnered positive anticipation among experts, including Professor Anthony Glees, a European affairs expert from The University of Buckingham. The initiative follows the release of the National Security Strategy report last June, which, while acknowledging the evolving nuclear threat landscape, made no mention of national conscription—a point Professor Glees finds concerning.

Historically, National Service has been a contentious topic, with successive governments dismissing military conscription in favor of volunteer-based armed forces. However, shifting global security dynamics have led some to advocate for the reintroduction of National Service as a crucial measure.

Professor Glees advocates for conscription tailored to individual capabilities, emphasizing the importance of bolstering the armed forces to address contemporary threats effectively. Defence Secretary John Healey sees the gap year program as a means to bridge the gap between society and the military, offering young Britons valuable exposure to armed forces training and skills.

As the 2026 initiative progresses, assessments will evaluate its impact on recruitment and operational strategies, aiming to attract school leavers and young adults seeking career direction. While financial details for recruits are yet to be finalized, the scheme is positioned as an enticing employment opportunity, providing valuable experiences for those exploring diverse career paths.

Looking ahead, Professor Glees envisions a future European conflict relying on conventional warfare rather than nuclear armaments, underscoring the significance of a robust land army for national defense. The new Army scheme, projected to last two years, will commence with basic training followed by specialization tracks, while Navy and RAF programs are in the planning stages.

Reflecting on the historical context of conscription, the evolution of mandatory military service in the UK underscores the changing roles of women in the armed forces, with all positions now open to female recruits since 2018.
