The leader of the Labour Party has issued a warning to Vladimir Putin, stating that the UK Government is closely monitoring Russia’s activities in British waters following the sighting of a suspicious vessel in the Channel.
Anna Turley mentioned that Keir Starmer, the party leader, is collaborating with international allies in addressing the situation. An oil tanker named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland, passing north of Guernsey early in the morning, as per tracking data.
There are suspicions that Tavian is linked to Putin’s clandestine fleet, utilized to circumvent restrictions on Russian oil trading.
Ms. Turley, the Labour Party chair, expressed her pride in Starmer’s efforts on the global stage and emphasized the importance of upholding international law while ensuring the safety of citizens and closely monitoring Russia’s activities in the region.
This development occurred shortly after the UK assisted the United States in seizing a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander stated that the vessel, Marinera, was part of the shadow fleet supporting Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
The UK’s collaboration with allies, such as the US, to counter Russian sanctions evasion was deemed appropriate by Alexander. The operation to capture the vessel involved RAF surveillance aircraft and the naval supply ship RFA Tideforce.
The vessel, previously known as Bella 1 and associated with Venezuela, was intercepted in the waters between Iceland and Scotland. Following the successful operation, the US military’s European Command expressed gratitude to the UK for its unwavering support.
Mr. Alexander highlighted that the vessel had been designated stateless under international law and had disabled its transponders, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to preventing illegal funding of conflicts like those in Ukraine.
Efforts to disrupt the financing of Russia’s military activities continue, with UK authorities and international partners actively working to impede the flow of funds supporting Putin’s war efforts.
