Keir Starmer responds to Donald Trump’s controversial threat of imposing tariffs on Greenland. The US President warned that eight countries, including the UK, would face 10% tariffs on all imports if they continued to oppose his efforts to acquire Greenland, with the tariff increasing to 25% by June if his demands were not met.
In reaction, the UK Prime Minister emphasized that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and Danes. He reiterated the importance of Arctic security for NATO and stressed the need for allies to collaborate in addressing threats, particularly from Russia in the Arctic region. Starmer condemned the idea of imposing tariffs on NATO allies for pursuing collective security and stated that the UK would engage directly with the US administration on the matter.
Trump argued that countries like China and Russia were interested in Greenland and claimed that only the US, under his leadership, could effectively handle the situation to protect national security interests. He announced plans to impose tariffs on countries visiting Greenland, citing concerns over global peace and security.
The UK recently deployed a military officer to Greenland, in support of Denmark’s increased military presence in the Arctic. Trump criticized multiple European countries for their involvement in Greenland, describing it as a dangerous situation jeopardizing global peace and security. He threatened to impose tariffs on these countries, escalating to 25% by June 2026 unless a deal for the purchase of Greenland was reached.
French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to sovereignty and independence of nations, expressing support for Ukraine and endorsing Denmark’s actions in Greenland to enhance security in the Arctic region. Macron rejected intimidation and tariff threats, emphasizing a united European response to uphold sovereignty.
Lib Dem leader Ed Davey criticized Trump’s tariff threats, calling for the UK to stand firm against the White House’s aggressive tactics and collaborate with European and Commonwealth allies to counter the proposed tariffs. Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage also denounced Trump’s tariff proposal, highlighting the negative impact on businesses and emphasizing the importance of respecting Greenland’s sovereignty.
Farage suggested reevaluating the strategic importance of Diego Garcia if Greenland faced potential threats. The political responses reflect a global concern over Trump’s tariff threats and the implications for international relations.
