A town in China, Gangkou, witnessed a disturbing incident where a lorry hit pedestrians while gunshots were heard in the vicinity. Videos circulating online depict a white van driven recklessly, crashing into vehicles on the wrong side of the road. One video shows the van hitting a person on the ground, then reversing before continuing to strike the individual. Emergency services with flashing lights can be seen arriving at the scene amid shouting and commotion.
Another clip captures the van being cornered by police cars, attempting to escape while people surrounding the vehicle try to intervene. Eventually, the driver is pulled out of the van after onlookers manage to gain access. Social media has been abuzz with reports of the incident, alleging that the lorry driver tried to breach a police blockade, prompting officers to fire at the vehicle in an effort to halt its escape. Tragically, the lorry collided with pedestrians on the street, including someone riding an electric bike.
Gangkou, situated in Guangdong province, a bustling area known for its port-related commerce, has seen public outrage towards the lorry driver. Many online users have drawn comparisons to a previous tragic event in Zhuhai, where 38 individuals lost their lives and 48 sustained injuries when a driver plowed into a group of people at a sports center in November 2024. The harrowing incident unfolded outside the Zhuhai Sports Centre, where witnesses rushed to aid the injured before emergency services arrived.
The police revealed that in the Zhuhai incident, a car struck multiple pedestrians at the sports center and fled the scene. The driver, identified as Fan Weiqiu, was reportedly dissatisfied with a divorce settlement and had attempted self-harm with a knife.
