Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a concerning new scam on the rise. The telecommunications company has issued an alert following a significant increase in fake call center numbers being distributed through artificial intelligence.
According to Virgin Media O2, millions of individuals may have already fallen victim to calling these fraudulent numbers, leading them to cybercriminals who attempt to steal personal information, including sensitive banking details.
It is estimated that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers through search engines or AI tools, as criminals exploit AI technology to deceive individuals seeking to contact reputable brands.
With many people relying on AI-generated search results for information, hackers have found an opportunity to deceive unsuspecting users. Virgin Media advises customers to exclusively use authentic service numbers provided on official company websites, apps, or billing statements.
For those needing assistance from O2, dialing 202 from an O2 device is the fastest way, while contacting Virgin Media can be done by calling 150 from a landline. Users are also advised to be cautious of numbers recommended by search engines, social media posts, or AI tools.
Furthermore, individuals are urged never to disclose security codes or personal details to unsolicited callers, regardless of who they claim to represent. Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the risks posed by AI tools enabling fraudsters to present realistic fake numbers through search results or chatbots, potentially leading individuals to criminals rather than legitimate service providers.
Virgin Media O2 has taken steps to safeguard customers by blocking known scammer numbers on the network and leveraging AI to flag over 1 billion suspicious calls to date. To combat scams effectively, the public is encouraged to report suspicious numbers to 7726 for prompt action against fraudsters.
