An upcoming fleet of autonomous taxis may soon hit the roads in the UK, with a projected launch date set for this fall.

Waymo, a US company, has announced plans to introduce its self-driving taxi service in London by the end of the year. The Mirror was granted early access to Waymo’s AI-driven autonomous cabs, known as robotaxis, which are currently undergoing testing on the streets of the capital.

Prior to commencing passenger services, the company must obtain official safety certification. Waymo, a division of tech behemoth Google, asserts that its cutting-edge technology has the potential to significantly reduce traffic accidents as well as injuries to pedestrians and cyclists.

Although fares for Waymo’s autonomous taxis are expected to be higher than those of traditional human-driven Uber and black cabs, the company believes it will appeal to individuals concerned about human drivers, especially during nighttime journeys, and those seeking enhanced privacy.

Nicole Gavel, Waymo’s senior director and head of business development and strategic partnerships, aims to establish the company as the most trusted driver globally, emphasizing the potential for substantial improvements in road safety. Gavel also described the experience of riding in one of their cabs as “magical.”

While the size of Waymo’s planned London fleet remains undisclosed, the company currently operates 1,000 vehicles in San Francisco and 700 in Los Angeles, as reported by the Mirror. Although London has a larger population than these cities, Waymo has not ruled out expanding its self-driving taxi services to other locations across the UK.

Meanwhile, Uber is also experimenting with autonomous taxis in London. Waymo executives assert that their advanced vehicles can adapt to the diverse conditions in the UK, ranging from intricate road networks to adverse weather conditions like heavy rain.

Waymo’s technology is engineered to continuously monitor the surroundings of the vehicle and predict unexpected events, such as pedestrians stepping out from obscured locations, claiming a superior level of perception compared to humans.

According to Ben Loewenstein, head of policy and government affairs for Waymo in the UK and Europe, the company’s cutting-edge technology will be integrated into a fleet of electric Jaguar I-Pace cars.

Despite Waymo’s optimism, skepticism remains among some industry figures. Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, questions whether individuals who are hesitant about robot technology handling simple tasks would trust it to transport children to school.

Andy Prendergast, national secretary of GMB, expressed concerns to the BBC about the potential social impacts of driverless vehicles, including effects on employment rates. Notably, Tesla’s self-driving software has been involved in several incidents in the US, including a fatal accident.

Visually distinctive with its prominent rooftop equipment and various cameras, one of Waymo’s initial London taxis offers a luxurious interior with leather seats, complemented by a rear touch screen tablet and other advanced features that set it apart from traditional cabs.

While human drivers currently oversee the testing phase, Waymo’s future plans involve transitioning these drivers to a passenger role, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous transportation.

Waymo and similar companies are counting on British consumers to embrace this technology, drawing parallels to its acceptance in American cities. The public’s response and willingness to pay a potential premium for driverless rides will ultimately determine the success of this futuristic mode of transportation.
