A man has been brought before the court, facing accusations of fatally shooting his wife in front of their children while she tried to call the police. The incident took place in southeast Indianapolis, Indiana, resulting in the death of Jeri Mains, 44, who succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on December 28. The alleged perpetrator, Cecil Mains, 47, has been formally charged with murder.
According to information revealed by prosecutors, Jeri’s children made distress calls to emergency services reporting that their father had shot their mother before fleeing the scene in his grey Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Cecil Mains was apprehended by authorities at a junction in southwest Indianapolis and was subsequently taken into custody.
Witness accounts provided by the children indicated that Cecil had arrived at the residence earlier that day and retrieved a firearm from a safe. A dispute ensued between Cecil and Jeri upon her return home, leading to a violent altercation where the children attempted to intervene but tragically resulted in Cecil shooting Jeri multiple times.
Medical examiners confirmed that the gunshots had struck vital organs, including Jeri’s heart, liver, and spine, causing fatal internal bleeding. Additionally, Jeri’s brother disclosed to investigators that Cecil had a history of physical abuse towards Jeri, which had previously led to him being expelled from the family home due to infidelity.
Reports revealed that threats of harm had been made by Cecil towards Jeri and other family members, prompting Jeri’s daughter to secure a restraining order against her father just days before the fatal incident. Previous incidents of violence were documented, including an altercation where Cecil physically assaulted Jeri following her request for a divorce, resulting in injuries to her arm.
Upon his arrest, Cecil Mains declined to cooperate with law enforcement, immediately requesting legal representation while being informed of his rights. He is currently detained at Marion County jail without bail and appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Monday.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist Jeri’s four children, aged 19, 17, 14, and 10. Marion County Prosecutor, Ryan Mears, expressed deep sympathy for the family, acknowledging the immense challenges faced by Jeri’s children in the wake of this devastating loss.
