A widow is advocating for legislative changes to address disparities in care for individuals with brain cancer. Ellie James is leading a movement after her husband Owain passed away in 2024 due to a glioblastoma, as he faced challenges in accessing personalized treatment without his unfrozen tumor tissue.

Mrs. James is spearheading a campaign pushing for patients to have the option to freeze and store their tissue post-surgery. This would facilitate access to tailored treatments and genetic examinations. Highlighting inconsistencies in this practice within the NHS, she emphasizes the need to eliminate regional variations in care.

She is urging for the implementation of Owain’s Law, which would empower patients to provide consent concerning the handling of their tissue. Mrs. James is convinced that if such a law had been in effect during her husband’s treatment, he might still be alive.

The matter is set to be deliberated in a Westminster Hall debate this week. Mr. James, a father, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2022 and underwent surgery to remove part of a sizable tumor. Post-surgery, the family fundraised for personalized treatment, discovering later that fresh-frozen tumor tissue was required for a vaccine, which they lacked due to improper preservation.

Despite temporary success with limited vaccines, the tumor eventually returned, leading to Mr. James’ passing in 2024. Mrs. James believes that with the appropriate number of vaccines from the start, his outcome could have been different.

Advocating for patient autonomy, she stresses the importance of informed consent regarding tissue management for future treatments or research. Owain’s Law, according to her, is about empowering patients with choices and control over their medical decisions.
