Two courageous British climbers, Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker, shared a daring ambition to conquer the world’s highest and most perilous peaks. Tragically, their quest came to a devastating end on Mount Everest in 1982. Both men, aged 31 and 33 respectively, were seasoned Himalayan climbers known for their bold and meticulous approach to ascents that allowed no room for error.

Their ultimate challenge was Everest’s treacherous North East Ridge, a route notorious for its Three Pinnacles and considered among the most hazardous on the mountain. On May 17, 1982, Boardman and Tasker embarked towards the Second Pinnacle, over 8,000 meters above sea level, where the thin air and precarious conditions posed fatal risks.

At the same time, tragedy struck elsewhere on the mountain as a female member of an American expedition met her demise in a crevasse at around 26,500 feet. This unfortunate incident added to the chaos and risks faced by climbers attempting perilous ascents without supplemental oxygen.

The disappearance of Boardman and Tasker remained undisclosed until the return of expedition leader Sir Chris Bonington, who revealed the grim details to a select group of journalists. The pair vanished behind a pinnacle on the upper ridge, and it was speculated that they might have fallen down the daunting 10,000-foot Kangshung Face due to exhaustion and harsh conditions.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding their fate, the climbing community mourned the loss of Boardman and Tasker, renowned not only for their mountaineering prowess but also for their literary contributions that captured the essence of mountain exploration. Boardman’s body was eventually discovered near the Second Pinnacle, while Tasker’s remains were never found.

In remembrance of their legacy, the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature was established to honor the enduring spirit of two men who dedicated their lives to the mountains and paid the ultimate price.
