A potentially devastating new storm is poised to impact parts of the United States before the weekend concludes, with concerns mounting over the possibility of life-threatening cold air ushering in snow and ice for approximately 160 million individuals.

Expected to make landfall later in the week and persist through the weekend, the storm is projected to traverse from Texas to the Carolinas, potentially leading to widespread power outages as ice accumulation poses risks to trees and power infrastructure. Meteorologists have cautioned that certain regions may receive more than 12 inches (30cm) of snowfall along with sleet and hazardous freezing rain.

Describing the impending weather event as a broad and potentially catastrophic occurrence spanning from Texas to the Carolinas, renowned weather expert Ryan Maue, a former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, expressed uncertainty about how communities will cope with the impact.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), life-threatening cold air is anticipated to advance eastward from the High Plains and Rockies starting Friday, bringing wintry conditions to about 160 million individuals across 30 states. In some areas, temperatures are expected to plummet significantly below freezing levels.

The most extreme wind chills, reaching as low as -46C or -50F, are forecasted for the Northern Plains, while a vast portion of the southeastern U.S. is also bracing for sub-zero temperatures. NWS has issued warnings about the potential life-threatening risks of hypothermia and frostbite due to exposed skin in these frigid conditions.

Meanwhile, snow showers are affecting the southern Great Lakes region along the U.S.-Canada border, as highlighted by the NWS.

Experts have advised residents in various states to prepare for over 12 inches (1 foot) of snow accumulation, including areas stretching from Colorado to West Virginia and upstate New York. Other states likely to experience similar snow depths include Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Further south, states could face the impact of freezing rain, which has the potential to weigh down trees, cause power outages, and trigger localized flooding.

Forecasters are facing challenges in pinpointing the exact areas that may be hit hardest by ice accumulation. Keith Avery, CEO of the Newberry Electric Cooperative in South Carolina, emphasized the catastrophic consequences that even a half-inch or an inch of ice could bring if not properly managed.
