A full decade has passed since the conviction of Don Collins for murder, a case marked by a distressing deathbed video where the victim identified him and disclosed his chilling motive. Collins perpetrated a heinous crime against his neighbor, Robbie Middleton, on his eighth birthday, turning what should have been a joyous occasion into a nightmare. Middleton was tied to a tree, doused in petrol, and set on fire by Collins, who was only 13 at the time.

Despite suffering burns over 99% of his body, Middleton miraculously clung to life for more than ten years before succumbing to skin cancer triggered by the severe burns. In 2015, Collins was handed a 40-year prison sentence for his actions. Robbie’s mother, Colleen, expressed her unease towards Collins, noting his cold and expressionless demeanor even in childhood.

As we near the 11th anniversary of Collins’ sentencing, we revisit the disturbing details of this tragic case. Robbie, the youngest of Colleen and Bobby’s three children, was known for his love of birthdays. On June 28, 1998, he excitedly received a new tent and planned to celebrate with friends and family in Splendora, Texas.

However, Collins, who had allegedly assaulted Robbie two weeks prior, intercepted him on his way home and committed the horrific act out of fear of exposure. Despite the severe burns that disfigured him, Robbie showed remarkable resilience and positivity throughout his ordeal, undergoing numerous surgeries and skin grafts. Sadly, at the age of 20 in 2011, Robbie passed away, but not before recording a video accusing Collins of his crimes.

Collins, who failed to register as a sex offender, was already incarcerated for another offense when the video surfaced, leading to murder charges. Witnesses also came forward with allegations of sexual assault by Collins, painting a chilling picture of his past actions. Despite Collins’ denial of the charges, a jury found him guilty and sentenced him to 40 years in prison.

Colleen and Bobby were awarded a symbolic $150 billion in a civil case against Collins before the trial. Colleen expressed satisfaction that justice was served for Robbie, emphasizing that the award was a validation of her son’s innocence. The tragic story of Robbie Middleton serves as a stark reminder of the enduring impact of senseless violence and the importance of seeking justice for the victims.
