An eight-year-old child was abducted and killed by a malevolent perpetrator who later dismembered the body, preserving the victim’s feet in a freezer. Levi Aron, the twisted criminal behind this heinous act, passed away in prison last month, marking the 15th anniversary of the appalling crime.
The tragic incident unfolded when the young boy, Leiby Kletzky, ventured home alone for the first time, seeking directions from Aron after getting lost on his way. This incident has resurfaced in the public eye following the death of the perpetrator, reigniting memories of the horrifying ordeal.
On July 11, 2011, Leiby was making his way home from a religious camp in Borough Park, Brooklyn, where his mother was supposed to meet him halfway. Despite having rehearsed the route with his parents the day before, the boy’s encounter with Aron proved to be fatal.
Aron confessed to diverting the child to a wedding in Rockland County before realizing a search operation was underway for the missing boy upon his return home. The killer recounted spending time with Leiby, who showed signs of being restrained, before going to work the next day and offering the boy a sandwich upon his return.
The Borough Park neighborhood, known for its Orthodox Jewish population, mobilized thousands of volunteers to aid in the search efforts for the child. Aron, panicked by the search operation, admitted to drugging and suffocating Leiby before dismembering the body and disposing of it. Shockingly, he retained the victim’s feet in his freezer near the boy’s residence.
Following a police investigation triggered by surveillance footage, Aron was found with incriminating evidence in his possession, leading to the discovery of the boy’s remains. Aron’s confession revealed the gruesome details of the crime, ultimately leading to his conviction for kidnapping and murdering the young boy from the Hasidic Borough Park community.
After serving nearly 15 years of his sentence, Aron passed away in a hospital at the age of 49, having been transferred from the Wende Correctional Facility due to a medical condition. His family, who faced threats following the murder, requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The victim’s father, Nachman Kletzky, condemned the senseless and malicious act that took his son’s life, refraining from commenting on Aron’s demise.
