A resident living near Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old US citizen fatally shot by federal agents, disclosed that he was a member of their local “Signal ICE” group chat.
Jeanne Massey, a local community outreach worker, mentioned that Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, resided just a street away from her. Pretti was part of the Kingfield signal ICE watch group, which volunteers use to respond promptly to ICE agent sightings in the area.
The ICE Watch group consists of many volunteers, including Massey and Pretti. Massey’s primary role involves coordinating rapid responses when ICE presence is detected in the neighborhood by patrolling the area, alerting residents, and witnessing the events. Pretti’s specific role within the group remains unclear.
Expressing the sentiments of her neighbors, Massey stated, “We are horrified, furious, and refuse to overlook the reality – another tragic act of violence by federal agents in our city.”
According to Massey, she joined numerous Minneapolis residents at the scene where the man was fatally shot, witnessing ICE officers confronting the crowd and using tear gas against onlookers.
The tragic events on Saturday morning risk overshadowing the display of unity witnessed the day before when thousands marched through Minneapolis streets. Massey described Friday’s protest as not only for immigrant neighbors but for everyone deserving to live without fear.
Despite the city’s fear, Minnesotans have made their stance clear – they will not back down.
“We will not be silenced, intimidated, or retreat,” Massey emphasized. “The resistance is growing and determined. It’s imperative to halt this operation immediately and remove these agents from Minnesota.”
