A group of Members of Parliament has raised concerns that delays from the government could lead to financial hardship for individuals seeking benefits. The Public Accounts Committee highlighted that some individuals are experiencing wait times exceeding a year for their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims to be processed.

The committee’s report, released recently, revealed that only 51% of PIP claims were processed within 75 working days in the 2024-25 period, falling short of the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) target of 75%. The report emphasized the detrimental impact of prolonged delays on claimants, potentially resulting in debt and poverty, with the DWP lacking a sufficient plan for immediate improvement.

MPs shared instances of constituents waiting excessively long periods for their claims to be processed, some enduring delays of over a year. Despite the DWP downplaying these delays in its statistics, MPs acknowledged the genuine hardship faced by claimants and urged the department to address the issue promptly.

Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, expressed disappointment in the DWP’s service quality, stating that disability claimants were receiving subpar assistance. He criticized the delayed improvements promised by the DWP and emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation to prevent claimants from falling into financial distress.

The Committee recommended that the DWP enhance transparency by providing detailed data on waiting times, including the longest recorded wait in 2024/25. PIP, a crucial disability benefit aiding individuals with extra living expenses due to daily task challenges, is granted to both employed and unemployed individuals.

Following a significant Labour opposition last summer, the government abandoned plans to restrict PIP eligibility and initiated a review led by DWP minister Sir Stephen Timms. The review is anticipated to conclude in the autumn, aiming to ensure the fairness and effectiveness of PIP moving forward.

In response, a DWP spokesperson highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the welfare system, emphasizing support for claimants to secure stable employment and overcome poverty. The DWP’s modernization program, backed by a £647 million investment, aims to revamp outdated systems and streamline processes for quicker decision-making on PIP awards. The Timms Review will further evaluate the overall effectiveness and fairness of PIP for future implementations.
