A significant transition in the telecommunications sector is underway in the UK, urging homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have long facilitated communication are being phased out in favor of a new technology known as Digital Voice, which utilizes broadband for making calls.
This upgrade not only aligns with current communication needs but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities like clearer audio, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.
Scheduled to come into effect from January 2027, the extensive overhaul has prompted BT to initiate an awareness campaign spearheaded by Clare Balding. The campaign, titled ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ encourages households to inspect their landline setups and ensure readiness for the digital era.
This initiative coincides with recent research indicating a tendency among Brits to procrastinate essential tasks, often assuming that functional systems do not require immediate attention.
Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly to notifications from service providers to avoid disruptions in essential services and assured that BT would provide guidance throughout the transition. Customers are assured that they are likely to retain their existing phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain unchanged with no anticipated increase in bills during the migration.
Most households will simply need to connect their current phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional wall sockets, eliminating the need for engineer visits. In case of any issues, contacting the provider should suffice to resolve connectivity problems.
Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, stressed the significance of heeding communications from service providers during this transformative shift to digital landlines. She emphasized the benefits of improved reliability and security offered by the new technology to ensure continued connectivity to essential services.
BT also urges customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform their providers promptly for tailored support arrangements.
Digital Voice, BT’s latest home phone service, utilizes broadband technology to replace copper connections, offering features like Multi Call, conference calling, and call diversion to mobile numbers. The service promises enhanced call quality and modern functionalities, though compatible Digital Home phones are necessary to leverage these benefits.
Transitioning to Digital Voice is expected to have minimal impact on most households’ phone usage, as the new service is bundled with broadband offerings at a single package price without any additional charges for Digital Voice services.
