Jannik Sinner’s opponent, Hugo Gaston, made an abrupt exit from their Australian Open match, overcome with emotion as he retired mid-game. Gaston, a French player ranked 93rd in the world, initially showed promise by earning three break points against the 2nd-ranked Sinner but appeared to struggle physically thereafter.

At a changeover, Gaston was observed taking tablets before returning to the court. Sinner seized the opportunity, winning the first set 6-2 and dominating the second set 6-1 as Gaston’s energy waned. With Sinner leading 2-0 in sets, Gaston opted to concede the match. Sinner displayed sportsmanship by consoling his tearful opponent.

In a post-match interview, Sinner acknowledged Gaston’s physical struggles, noting his subdued performance. Tim Henman, a former British No. 1 and TNT Sports commentator, speculated on Gaston’s condition, mentioning medical intervention during the match.

Sinner expressed gratitude for being back at the Australian Open, a place of significance for him, and praised the event’s atmosphere.
