Reports suggest that inmates at a harsh Venezuelan prison, El Helicoide in Caracas, face severe mistreatment such as being hung, beaten, sexually assaulted, and subjected to degrading acts with excrement-filled bags. Originally designed as a spiral-shaped shopping center in the 1950s, the facility now operates as a place of extreme suffering and torture under the administration of Nicolás Maduro.
Known as a symbol of “hell on Earth,” El Helicoide prison offers inmates a grim reality where they endure various forms of torture, including the “Russian” or “white torture” which involves solitary confinement in a small, windowless cell painted entirely in white with continuous bright lights, leading to psychological distress and disorientation.
According to The Telegraph, prisoners at El Helicoide have been subjected to brutal treatment, including instances of electrocution and sexual violence with rifles. Former inmate Rosmit Mantilla revealed disturbing details of the horrendous conditions inside the prison, where individuals were left blind or severely injured due to the torture techniques employed by the guards.
The appalling living conditions at El Helicoide are further highlighted by the lack of space, inadequate ventilation, and unsanitary practices such as forcing inmates to urinate where they also store their food. Inmates are subjected to extreme discomfort, with some cells earning nicknames like “little hell” due to their unbearable conditions.
While the prison remained largely vacant for years, recent military actions in Venezuela, led by Donald Trump, resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro, potentially bringing hope to the families of El Helicoide inmates. Following these events, the Venezuelan government has announced the release of some prisoners, although conflicting reports exist regarding the actual number of individuals freed.
