One of the key figures in the implementation of Donald Trump’s immigration policies, Greg Bovino, has been relieved of his duties, sources indicate. The senior Border Patrol commander, who played a central role in the administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement operations, has been reassigned to his previous position in California.

Following controversy over the shooting incident involving Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, some of Bovino’s agents are reportedly departing the city. This move represents a notable shift in federal law enforcement approach amidst growing public outcry. Tom Homan, appointed as the “border tsar” by the Trump administration, is set to take charge of the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis and engage with local authorities.

In response to the fatal incident during an immigration enforcement operation, the Minnesota Department of Corrections has launched a dedicated website to counter what state officials view as misinformation from the Department of Homeland Security. The site aims to provide accurate information on the state’s procedures regarding federal requests for detainment, countering claims made by federal officials.

The online platform includes specific instances where state officials complied with federal detainment requests, debunking assertions by the Trump administration that individuals subject to deportation orders were routinely released. Additionally, videos showcasing lawful transfers of custody from state to federal authorities aim to dispel allegations of non-cooperation by local agencies.

Apart from the website, the Department of Corrections issued statements to clarify the criminal backgrounds of individuals mentioned by federal authorities, including the individual involved in the operation near Pretti’s shooting. The department refuted claims of a significant criminal record and emphasized that the person had only minor past traffic offenses.

Legal expert Jimmy Gurulé commented on the strained relationship between state and federal entities in Minnesota, describing it as unusually tense. He noted that while disputes between agencies are common in large-scale law enforcement initiatives, the public nature of this conflict is atypical. Gurulé highlighted the breakdown in trust between state and local law enforcement and federal agencies, questioning how the situation deteriorated to the point of legal intervention.
