Britain is prepared to assist allies in intercepting Russian shadow ships that are providing financial support to Vladimir Putin’s military efforts, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to strengthen measures against Russia’s clandestine fleet, consisting of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false identities to evade Western sanctions. The UK is advocating for more decisive actions against these covert vessels, which are channeling funds to the Kremlin for the conflict in Ukraine and causing harm to vital undersea cables.

Although British forces have not yet boarded any of these ships, they supported the US in a recent operation to seize a tanker linked to Russia that was accused of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. Discussions are underway regarding the legal framework for potential military intervention.

During a visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper boarded a patrol vessel and met with members of the Finnish Border Guard, who play a crucial role in defending against Russian threats along the country’s extensive border. The Turva patrol ship was involved in an operation targeting a Russia-affiliated vessel accused of disrupting undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.

Ms. Cooper stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive ban on Russian oil shipments to cut off a significant source of revenue for Moscow. She highlighted the UK’s monitoring of enforcement actions by European partners against illicit vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea and off the coast of France.

Observing a demonstration of Finland’s border guards in action, Ms. Cooper learned about the recent raid on the Fitburg vessel, emphasizing the importance of such interventions as deterrents against rogue activities. Finland is authorized to use military force against unauthorized vessels when necessary.

Recent incidents of Russian vessels approaching UK waters have raised concerns, prompting Defense Secretary John Healey to issue warnings. Ms. Cooper expressed determination to intensify efforts against the Russian shadow fleet and disrupt Putin’s operations that threaten national security.

In discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, the Foreign Secretary initiated a tour of the Arctic Circle, with a focus on heightened security concerns in the region following discussions about potential actions by the US in Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese influence.
