McDonald’s customers are expressing anger following the announcement of a significant alteration to its loyalty program. The popular fast-food chain is set to raise the points threshold required to redeem free food via MyMcDonald’s Rewards. Currently, patrons need 5,500 points to claim items like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting March 17, the redemption threshold will increase to 6,500 points. Customers earn 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.

The current 1,500 points needed for items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries will also see an increase to 2,000 points. Moreover, the points requirement for items like a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will elevate from 2,500 points to 3,500. To redeem a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, customers will now need 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.

In response to customer concerns on social media, one fan expressed dissatisfaction, while another inquired about the commencement date of the new policy. A McDonald’s spokesperson informed The Sun that the adjustments to the loyalty program are a response to escalating food and supply expenses. They clarified that while the points needed have been raised due to these increased costs, new redemption options have been added, including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and the new Sausage Sandwich.

The changes come alongside the launch of McDonald’s new menu, featuring unique offerings like the Surf N’ Turf burger, which includes two beef patties, a crispy white fish fillet patty, cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Additionally, the new Chicken Cheeseburger has been introduced, featuring a beef patty, a crispy coated chicken patty, cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Customers can also indulge in the new Espresso Milkshake, a thick vanilla milkshake served with a shot of espresso, and the new Chilli Cheese Bites accompanied by a tangy tomato sauce.
