Iran has witnessed a surge in casualties following unrest that began on December 28, resulting in a violent crackdown by Iranian authorities. Ayatollah Khamenei accused the US President of supporting the rebellious individuals and labeled him a criminal for the damage caused. He claimed that the protesters, whom he referred to as “foot soldiers” of the United States, had caused significant destruction.

The protests initially erupted due to economic concerns as the government moved to eliminate currency subsidies, leading to a spike in prices amidst high inflation. Reports indicate a death toll of 2,435 protesters and 153 security personnel, with over 18,470 arrests. Some sources suggest the number of fatalities could be as high as 10,000, surpassing previous periods of unrest in Iran.

US President Trump criticized Ayatollah Khamenei’s leadership, calling for new governance in Iran. Despite previous statements hinting at military action, Trump recently shifted towards a more conciliatory stance, acknowledging Iran’s decision to cancel planned executions. He had previously warned of consequences if the violence against protesters continued.

Ayatollah Khamenei blamed the unrest on armed rioters allegedly supplied with foreign ammunition. While Iran has now returned to a fragile calm, Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of instigating the turmoil. There have been no recent signs of protests in Tehran, with daily life seemingly back to normal.
